The journal Alcoholism and Drug Addiction/Alkoholizm i Narkomania [originaly: Alkoholizm i Narkomania] was published in 1988 on the initiative of the Polish Psychiatric Association and the Institute of Psychiatry and Neurology. Initially, it was published irregularly, but since 1995 systematically as a quarterly in a form that meets generally accepted international standards for scientific journals.

The quarterly Alcoholism and Drug Addiction/Alkoholizm i Narkomania is targeting research community in the field of psychoactive substances and behavioural addiction, practitioners working in this field and all interested in these issues. It has an interdisciplinary character and publishes papers on issues related to psychoactive substances and behavioural addictions, examined from the variety of perspectives, including basic research, clinical, epidemiological as well as social, cultural and historical studies.

The aim of the journal is to disseminate scientific findings of the Polish and international research on addiction, to strengthen and integrate the scientific community on the one hand, and to build bridges between science and practice, on the other. The journal serves as a forum for exchange of experiences between various professional communities.

The journal publishes original articles, review and monographic articles, case reports, research reports, papers presented at scientific conferences, conference reports, book reviews, polemics, letters and short communications. All scientific papers are anonymously evaluated by two independent referees (double-blind review).
